Generation M
It’s 7:30 pm and Lisa is doing her homework. But that’s not all she’s doing. While studying for her Biology exam, she’s also listening to music, chatting online, downloading songs, and texting on her phone. “My parents tell me off for doing too many things at once, but it actually helps me focus,” she says.

Today’s teenagers spend about 7 hours and 38 minutes a day using electronic media — even more than most adults work. And because they often use several devices at once, they actually consume almost 11 hours of media content daily. That’s why they’re often called the “multi-tasking generation” or “Generation M”.

But how does the brain handle this? Simple things like walking and talking can be done at the same time, but learning new things while multitasking is harder. “It affects learning negatively,” says Russell Poldrack, a psychology professor at UCLA. When attention is split, it's harder to remember what you learn. So, multitasking while studying isn't the best idea.

Experts also say it’s important to take breaks from screens. “As soon as the bell rings, my students grab their phones like they’re afraid of silence,” says teacher Casey Roberts. “Their devices are like extensions of themselves. But Generation M should take time to relax, connect with others, and enjoy real-life communication.”

Main idea:
Technology is a big part of life, but it shouldn’t replace real experiences. Generation M needs to find balance between the digital world and real life.
