1. He was an American. He lived in the 19th century. In 1836 he designed and patented a pistol. It was a pistol with a revolving chamber(вращающаяся камера)that could fire six bullets(пули) one after another. It was the first pistol of its kind. Later came along many other pistols with six bullets.

2.He was a German engineer. He was born in 1858 and died in 1913. In 1897 he invented a new internal combustion engine(двигатель внутреннего сгорания). The engine is known as a diesel and it began a transport revolution in cars, trucks, trains and ships.The main advantage of diesels is that they ran on rather cheap fuel.

3.He was born in 1791. He died in 1872. He was a portrait painter. Than he became an inventor. For twelve years he tried to
perfect the telegraph and was finally successful. Later he invented the telegraphic dot-and-dash(точка тире) alphabet. Now it is known as a code. Code was not the only one in America at that time. There were some others. But now we only use his code all over the world.

4.He lived from 1766 to 1843 in Scotland and was a chemist by profession. He worked in the textile industry. In 1823 he developed a rubber solution(раствор резины). This rubber solution was used for raincoat (плащ). Raincaots with this rubber solution didn't allow water to penetrate(проникать).
These raincoatswere called makintoshes. Now people all over the world use them in spring and in autumn.

Once he met another enthusiast for cars, Henry Royce. Henry Royce was a famous car engineer. They decided to design the most comfortable and reliable car. At last in 1907 they created the world-famous car. It was so comfortable and reliable that one of the models of these cars, "Silver Ghost“(фантом), remained unchanged for 20 years since 1907.

At the same time they organized two firms to produce them. All the cars produced by the firm of one inventor were called "Mercedes". Mercedes was the name of the daughter of one of the stockholders of the firm.
This man saved the firm of the first inventor from the financial crisis and he joined the firm of the second inventor. Since that time all the cars produced by their firm have been called "Mercedes…………….".
