General information about the USA
America is a relatively young country, with a rich history and diverse culture. The United States of America, or simply "the US", is located in North America and occupies the fourth largest area in the world. At present, the population of the US is over 320 million people, making it one of the most populous countries in the world. The capital city of the country is Washington, D.C., although many people mistakenly believe that New York City is the capital. Washington D.C. is an independent district that is not a part of any state. The city was founded in 1791 and was named after George Washington, the first president of the US.

The history of the United States
The history of the United States is a fascinating one. In the late 15th century (1492), Christopher Columbus, a navigator, discovered a new continent in the Caribbean that would later be known as America. With the arrival of Europeans, these lands began to become populated, and the culture and way of life of the native people started to change.
On May 10, 1775, the Second Continental Congress reconvened. For the delegates, the current situation provided a good reason to assume the role of government. By their decision, detachments of American militias were formed on the territory of the colonies, and George Washington was appointed commander-in-chief.

Thanksgiving day
Thanksgiving, another significant American holiday, takes place on the fourth Thursday of November and has roots in colonial times. It is perhaps the only holiday where Americans tend to stay at home.Another American tradition is Halloween. On this holiday, adults and children enjoy carving pumpkin lanterns and dressing up in scary costumes to go to parties. Children also love to wander from door to door asking for candy, shouting "Trick or treat!"
