Red caves

Слайд #2

The Red Caves or Kizil-Koba is a whole complex of galleries, halls, labyrinths, formed by the powerful underground river Kizilkobinka. This river still continues its work, flowing along the lowest tier and forming the Su-Uchkhan waterfall at the exit. The age of the Red Caves, which is voiced by experts, is about 2.5 million years. And this complex got its name for all the shades of red, which gives the rock iron oxide.
They began to explore the dungeon a long time ago, but the route for excursions was organized only in 1989, and even then on a site that was only 500 meters long.

The entire system of the Red Caves is not accessible to ordinary sightseers. Hidden rooms located behind hard-to-reach places - tunnels filled with water, or as they are called siphons, hide huge halls with high ceilings and small deaf rooms, real canyons washed out by a turbulent current, narrow manholes, winding corridors and God knows what else. It is not surprising that such a cave, with many spacious rooms and passages, was chosen by the ancient people, who, according to experts, lived in this area in the 7th-6th centuries. BC. Presumably, these were Cimmerian tribes, but speaking of them, they now mention another name - Kizilkobins.

The tribes had their own culture, well-organized way of life, but they had a passion for a special religious cult. Archaeologists have discovered burials of domestic and wild animals sacrificed, as well as a sanctuary. Found here and other artifacts that you will see when visiting the halls. The Red Caves and the Scythians, who left behind ancient amphorae from wine, as well as the Golden Horde, and it is still unknown what kind of people of that time, whose military weapons were securely hidden in hiding places, did not bypass the Red Caves. It is known that in the 1800s, not yet equipped caves were already of interest to the curious. So, in 1825, with the help of torches and candles, the wonderful writer A. S. Griboedov examined the Red Caves. Subsequently, one of the galleries will be named after him.
