In his youth, while still studying at the University of Edinburgh, Doyle became interested in the books of Bret Garth and Edgar Allan Poe, whose "Golden Beetle" left indelible impressions in the heart of a young man. Inspired by novels and mystical stories, the young man began to write himself — the first works of the future classic appeared in a student magazine. In 1880, before receiving his diploma, the Briton went to the Arctic as a ship's doctor. The trip gave him not only life experience, but also material for creativity — impressions from the trip then formed the basis of the story "Captain of the Polar Star".
