Louisa May Alcott's novel Little Women, published in 1868, takes place in New England and is inspired by the events of her own family and life.

The family consists of 4 sisters, their mother Marmie and father Robert

Father of the family:
Robert used to be rich, but he helped friends who could not repay the debt, which led to the poverty of his family. A scholar and priest, he served as a chaplain in the Union Army during the Civil War and was wounded in December 1862.
He's tough and loves books as much as Joe does. He is very kind and has a peaceful, slightly melancholic expression, like Beth.

To the plot:
The mother of the main characters gives them a guide for Christmas that helps them overcome their shortcomings and stay true to their beliefs. The girls go in different ways that are described in the book. It is overcoming difficulties and their shortcomings that is the main idea of the novel.
Consider the way of each of the sisters.

Beth:
Each of the sisters determined their desire. Beth said her wish would be to stay with their mother and father and take care of the family. Which she did. She felt that she had nothing else to do.
When her sisters grew up, they started leaving home, but Beth had no desire to leave her home or family.
Later in the book, she developed scarlet fever. She survived the illness, but eventually Beth got sick again. She never sat idly by; she knitted and sewed things for the children who passed under her window on the way to and from school. But in the end, even this became too much work for her, and she put down the sewing needle, saying that it had become "so heavy." Beth died in Marmie's arms. Beth's death had a strong impact on her sisters, especially Jo, who decided to live her life with more attention and care for others. Beth was twenty-three years old at the time of her death.

Jo:
The sisters became friends with their neighbor, Theodore "Laurie" Lawrence. Jo called him Teddy. While Laurie was in college, Jo continued to work on her script.
During this time, Laurie realized that he had fallen in love with Joe. Sensing his feelings, Jo confessed to her mother that she loved Laurie, but as a brother, and that she could not love him romantically. Laurie made her a marriage proposal, but she refused him.
Jo decided she needed a break and spent six months with her mother's friend in New York, working as a governess for her two children. The family ran a boarding house. She took German lessons from Professor Friedrich Baer, who lived in the house. They soon became good friends. For extra money, Jo wrote stories without morals, which disappointed him. They quarreled, and when Jo found out that Beth was unwell, she left New York and devoted her time to caring for her dying sister.
At her invitation, Professor Baer came to the Marsh House and stayed there for two weeks. On his last day, he proposed to Joe. Aunt March died, leaving Plumfield to Joe. She and Baer turned the house into a school for girls and boys, and they had two sons of their own.

Mag:
Meg's desire was to become a rich mistress who lived in a luxurious estate and enjoyed all the best.
Later, meeting the world of the rich taught her a harsh lesson, and Beth's illness made her appreciate the benefits of life better, such as good health.
Aunt March advises her not to marry Mr. Brooke because he is poor and has no connections. This accusation angers Meg, and she decides to be with Mr. Brooke because his poverty has made him a valuable person. Mr. Brooke overhears Meg confessing her love to him
Growing up, she turned into a beautiful woman and married John Brooke, her neighbor's mentor. They had three children.

Amy:
Amy was the most spoiled and capricious of the sisters. She is the opposite of Joe.
Amy has become a decent woman and wants to marry a rich man so that she does not have financial difficulties, but at the last minute refuses Fred Vaughn and marries Laurie instead. She is said to have called him "My Lord." She is very happy and gives birth to Beth Lawrence, named after her late sister, and is absent throughout the subsequent books due to work on paintings in France.

Result:
We have considered the ways of the sisters. We can say that they all remained true to themselves to the end. Each of them chose a path, perhaps it changed for some, but they all came to the morally correct ending. This is what their mother did when she gave them Christmas presents at the beginning of the book. Thus, the main idea of the book is to remain human and stay true to yourself.
