Today Scotland is considered to be one of the most beautiful mountainous countries in the world. It is one of the four parts of the United Kingdom. It shares land borders only with England. It has been in political union with England since the beginning of the 18th century. The head of Scotland is the English monarch – Queen Elizabeth II.

the Patron Saint
The flag of Scotland is a blue flag with a white oblique cross . According to the legend, the Christian Apostle Andrew was crucified on an oblique cross.

The National emblem
The thistle is the national emblem of
Scotland. This is how it came to be chosen as
the emblem. The Scots assembled to defend
their country from Norsemen.
They decided to take the Scots
by surprise and attack them in
their sleep. But one of
the Norsemen stepped
on a thistle and shrieked loudly.
The Scots woke up,
and the Norsemen
were put to flight.

The culture of Scotland comes from ancient times and has its own long-held traditions. One of these is the kilt. In the past, there were different clans which each had their own tartan. Everybody in the clan had the same family name like MacDonald (Mac means «son of» ). On their national day , Scottish men still wear kilts. A famous Scottish instrument is the bagpipes.

Highland Games
Scottish Highland Games is a festival with competitions in Scottish sports, dancing and music, held every year in the Highlands. The games take place in a large arena. Several events take place at the same time: dancers perform on a platform, athletes toss the caber, put the weight, throw the hammer and wrestle. There is also a competition for the best-dressed Highlander.

New Year
New year in Scotland has its own name: Hogmanay. Its celebration is still connected with various national ceremonies. When the striking of the clock starts, the host must rise and open, without a word, the door – so as to make the old year go out and to let the new year in.

Christmas
Many years ago Christmas, December 25, was much more important holiday in Scotland than now. It is still a family holiday. Traditionally all relatives and friends get together and give each other presents. But New Year’s Day is celebrated more brightly.
Traditional Christmas dishes are:
dried fruit pies,
baked apples,
oatmeal cakes,
haggies and,
of course, the Scottish
whisky.

Robert Burns
He was a Scottish poet. He was born in 1759. Scots simply call him The Bard. His birthday is on the 25th of January. Robert Burns‘ s poetry was inspired by his deep love for history and folklore of his Motherland. His beautiful poem “My Heart's In the Highlands”, full of colourful descriptions of nature, is the hymn to the beauty of the Scotland's nature.

Burns Night
A Burns supper is a celebration of the life and poetry of the great Scottish poet Robert Burns, the author of many poems. The suppers are normally held on or near the poet’s birthday, the 25th of January, sometimes also known as Robert Burns Day or Burns Night.

Слайд #17
The main course is haggies, which is served with “tatties and neeps” (mashed potatoes and turnip). This is accompanied by chicken and leek soup and a traditional Scottish dessert such as sherry trifle or oatcakes.
The evening always ends with everyone joining hands and singing Burns’ world-famous song “Auld Lang Syne”, meaning “For Times Gone By”.

Clans of Scotland — the tribal communities with the internal patriarchal device having the general ancestor. A distinctive sign of belonging to this or that clan at Scots is the tartan with the drawing, characteristic of each clan. The word clan of the Gaelic origin is also translated as "children, posterity, descendants".

In every day life the Scottish men usually
wear the same clothes as the Europeans.
But going to the wedding, to the graduation party, to the international rugby match
or to Highland Games, they wear a kilt, a traditional Scottish costume.
National Costumes

Слайд #20
The Scottish traditional national costume is famous all over the world. Its distinctive feature is a small kilt for men and a long skirt for women sewed of woolen fabric named tartan.

Слайд #21
Man‘s Costume
The Scottish men’s costume is derived from the ancient costume of the highlanders.
The main detail of the costume is a skirt or a kilt which is made of tartan, woollen cloth woven with bands of different colours and widths crossing each other at right angles, of a kind worn originally by Scottish highlanders.

Слайд #22
The kilt is worn with a special belt and a leather bag. On their head they usually put “tam-o-shanter” , a Scottish flat wool cap without a brim but with a bobble on top, traditionally worn pulled down at one side (named after Tam o’ Shanter, the hero of Burns’ poem, published in 1790)

Слайд #23
Woman’s Costume
Women in Scotland wore a simple bodycon dress without decoration. The top dress was decorated with lace . The dress was worn with a woolen apron. On holidays women wore a cloak on the shoulders.
Married women wore a white shawl on the head.
