New Visuality at The Big Tent Ideas Festival

This weekend we’re reimagining the refugee experience as if we were living through it. We have found in previous projects with the public that any lack of empathy often comes down to the fact that nobody has guided them through the human experience of having to leave home, having to pack only one or two items before they go into the unknown. It is this that as a visual charity we would like to focus on. In collaboration with Refugee Action York. Blueberry Academy, and York College’s ESOL students (English to Speakers of Other Languages), we’re looking at 'what can't YOU leave behind'? It may be a keepsake, a phone, a wallet, a book, a photograph, a lucky charm. We will discuss and we will draw each item as an icon in pre-designed suitcases, created by asylum seekers and refugees based in Yorkshire, and add them to this very digital magazine at which you’re squinting on your device.
