New Zealand
New Zealand is a state in Polynesia, located in the southwestern part of the Pacific Ocean on two large islands: North and South,
separated by the Cook Strait,
including also small islands.

The official name of the country "New Zealand" began to take shape in the middle of the 17th century - at first it appeared in the records of Dutch cartographers as Nova Zeelandia, in honor of one of the provinces of the Netherlands - Zeeland. Later, in the 18th century, the British navigator James Cook used the version of this name in his records - New Zealand.

Territory

The territory of New Zealand is divided into 17 districts, 9 of which are located on the North Island, 7 on the South Island, and one more on the Chatham Archipelago. From north to south, the South Island is crossed by the Southern Alps, the highest peak of which is Mount Cook (3724 m.).

History
The history of New Zealand, according to various sources, began about seven hundred years ago. Dutch navigator Abel Tasman
became the first European to visit New Zealand.

Captain James Cook, who reached the shores
of a distant country in October 1769, became
the first European who was able to travel around
the country and put it on a map.
In 1840, the Treaty of Waitangi was concluded between Britain and the Maori, under the terms of which the same civil rights were granted.

State-political structure
New Zealand is a unitary state based on the principles of constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy. The system of government
is based on the principle of the Westminster model of parliamentarism,
which consists in the fact that political power is exercised
by a democratically elected parliament: the queen reigns,
but the government rules as long as it has the support of the House of Representatives.

In 1985, New Zealand officially becomes a nuclear-free country and prohibits ships with nuclear weapons or nuclear power plants from entering its territorial waters. Two years later, in 1987, a law was passed recognizing the Maori language as the second official language of the state along with English.

New Zealand is one of the most impressive places on the planet. Untouched wildlife attracts millions of tourists here. The fabulous landscapes of this country became the scenery of Peter Jackson's legendary trilogy "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit". And a village specially created for the filming of the film, called Hobbiton, has become a local landmark and a place of pilgrimage for tourists from all over the world.

Animal world
Only in New Zealand there is a unique protected area - Stephens Island, where one of the rare animals of the planet lives - the tuatara, which is considered a close relative of dinosaurs. Only people come here to go to Cape Reina and see how the Pacific Ocean meets the Tasman Sea, and also to ride a boat along the underground river in the Waitomo Firefly Cave and see tiny kiwi birds.

Big cities
Wellington is the capital of New Zealand, a cozy and
beautiful city that amazes tourists with its many tunnels and bridges,
cozy squares and interesting sights.
You can look at the round parliament building, which is shaped like a beehive. Opposite it is the former residence of the government of
New Zealand - a unique wooden building from 1876.
The city hosts tours of the filming locations of the film
"The Lord of the Rings", with visits to museums and
favorite vacation spots of the actors who were involved in the filming.

There is a botanical garden on the side of the mountain,
you can get to it by the Cable-car funicular, admiring
the incredible landscapes along the way.
