Francis Drake -was an English sea captain, navigator, slaver, and politician of the Elizabethan era.He was second-in-command of the English fleet against the Spanish Armada in 1588. He also carried out the second circumnavigation of the world, from 1577 to 1580. His exploits were legendary, making him a hero to the English but a pirate to the Spaniards to whom he was known as El Draque. King Philip II was said to have offered a reward of 20,000ducats, about £4 million (US$6.5M) by modern standards, for his life .while we know that there is the Strait named after him. Birth and early years.
Francis Drake, One of the most famous of English sailors and pirates, was born in Plymouth, a seaport and the largest town in the south of England. He was the eldest of the twelve sons of Edmund Drake (1518–1585), a Protestant farmer.
The boy spent much of his time looking at the ships in Plymouth harbor and talking to the seamen. At fifteen he was taken on a small ship and worked there for some years. In teenager Francis got on a merchant ship by a cabin boy and gradually learned the art of managing a ship. To 21 years he was already the captain of your own ship. Regular trading is not too attractive young man: he was looking for faster ways to get rich. So in the years 1566-1567 Drake started the slave trade, but soon left this occupation, carried away looting by the Spanish ships.

Sailing career
When Drake was twenty- five, he was made a captain’s mate, and soon after the captain of a ship. At age 23, Drake made his first voyage to the New World, sailing with his second cousin, Sir John Hawkins, on one of a fleet of ships owned by his relatives, the Hawkins family of Plymouth Sae-battles between English and Spanish ships were common at the time. Once a small fleet of six English ships were attacked by Spanish ships in the Atlantic Ocean. Four of the English ships were burnt and only two, one of which was commanded by Drake came back to England.
Drake demanded that the king of Spain should pay him for the lost ships. Of course, the king of Spain refused to pay. Drake was very angry and declared that he would take all he could from the king of Spain. And he fulfilled his threat. He crossed the Atlantic with two small ships and captured several Spanish ships loaded with gold and silver.

Entering the Pacific
In November 1577 five ships with Francis Drake at the head sailed off from Plymouth. Drake crossed the Atlantic, passed through the Strait of Magellan and reached Cape Horn, southernmost point of South America.
After a short rest the ships sailed north all along the west coast of South, Central and North America. Leaving North America, Drake crossed the Pacific and visited the island of Java, in the south of Asia. After that he sailed across the Indian Ocean to the Cape of Good Hope, where he came in June 1580.
Sailing north along the west coast of Africa, Drake visited the Canary Islands, then sailed on and in September 1580 he returned to England. The voyage lasted nearly three years. Drake was the first Englishman who sailed around the world.

Final years
Seven years after the victory over the Spanish Armada, in 1595, Drake, at the head of a large fleet, sailed from Plymouth again to attack the Spaniards in America and the West Indies..
The Atlantic was crossed in a month, but soon afterwards Drake fell ill. He died of dysentery when he was about 55 in January 1596 after unsuccessfully attacking San Juan, Puerto Rico. Before dying, he asked to be dressed in his full armors. He was buried in a lead coffin, near Portobelo and was buried in the sea.
