The origins of the term “Cossacks”
The etymology of the word ‘Cossack’ is not fully known.
According to one theory, translated from Mongolian, it means “to guard a frontier” and the Cossacks were, indeed, a military formation that guarded the borders of the Russian Empire.
According to another theory, it is a Turkic word for an “adventurer” or “free man”.

Russian Cossacks
The first Cossacks lived on the outskirts of the Russian lands, (mainly in the South)– approximately from the 14th-15th centuries.
They were serfs who had run away to find their own freedom.

In a short time free Cossack communities arose along the banks of the Don, Volga, Dnieper, Terek, Yaik (Urals). They mastered vast expanses up to the Black and Caspian Seas, the Caucasus Mountains.
The Cossacks were named by their geographical locations.
Don Cossacks are the most ancient Cossack culture.

Involvement in state service of Russian army
By the end of the XVII century, the Cossacks in Russia gradually began to transform into those associations that made the whole world consider them the elite of the Russian army.
By the beginning of the XX century, the following Cossack troops were formed:
Amur, Astrakhan, Don, Transbaikal, Kuban, Orenburg, Semirechensk, Siberian, Tersk, Ural, Ussuri.

Shashka
The shashka (saber) was as much an essential attribute of a real Cossack as his horse. It’s a long, slightly curving blade designed for stabbing and hacking.
A Cossack wore his saber on his belt at all times and all but slept with it next to him.
