the– определённый артикль.
1) Употребляем, если речь идет о предмете, о котором уже говорилось раньше.
(I see a tree. The tree is green).
2) Употребляем, если имеем в виду конкретный предмет, известный говорящим.
(Open the book – Откройте книгу)
a /an – неопределённые артикли.
Употребляем только с исчисляемыми существительными в единственном числе.
‘a’ – если следующее слово начинается с согласной буквы
(a cat,  a funny dog)
‘an’ – если следующее слово начинается с гласной буквы.
(an elephant,  an apple)
Если перед существительным стоит прилагательное (a funny dog), то артикль ставим перед словосочетанием (перед прилагательным).

Артикль НЕ употребляется:
1) С именами собственными (Имена, клички животных, названия стран, городов и т.д.)
2) С числительными (five books, one kitten)
3) С указательными местоимениями – this (этот), that (тот), these (эти), those (те) – this pen, those cats.
4) Со словом ‘no’ (но не ‘not’) – I have  no pen (у меня нет ручки).
но: I have not got a pen. (У меня нет ручки).
5) С притяжательными местоимениями (my, his, her, their, our, your) – my pen.
