Walter Elias Disney was born on December 5th 1901 in Chicago, Illinois. His farther Elias was a carpenter and his mother Flora was a teacher. Walt Disney had 3 brothers and a sister. Walt was fond of drawing from an early age. He was only 7 when he sold his first sketch of a horse to the neighbour and got 25 pences.

Disney’s family was rather poor. As a child he used to work as a paperboy. At his teenage years he worked as a driver in the army. When he returned home he took up art as the main interest.

In 1923 Walt left for Hollywood. He had only $40 with him. His brother Roy lived in California and together they started the famous Disney Brothers Studio. The first animated cartoon was released in 1924. It was Alice's Day at Sea. The cartoon was followed by the whole series of other motion pictures about Lewis Caroll's character Alice in Wonderland. This series didn't have much success.

The first successful picture was created together with his friend Ub Iwerks. It was the cartoon about the Lucky Rabbit Oswald which became popular among children.

The next popular hero that Disney came up with was Mickey Mouse in 1928. However, Walt Disney originally suggested to use the name Mortimer Mouse instead of Mickey Mouse. But his wife Lillian didn’t like it and offered the name Mickey.

Mickey appeared in the first sound cartoon Steamboat Willie. It had a great success. For creating this iconic character Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks received the Oscar.

Nowadays Mickey Mouse is the official mascot of the Walt Disney Company.

Over the next several years Walt Disney made some of his most popular cartoons, such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo and Bambi. He made 81 movies in total while he was alive.

Walt Disney won 26 Oscars and many other Academy awards. He was also bestowed the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian honour of the USA, after his death.

Walt Disney was married to Lillian Bounds, who worked in the Walt Disney Company. They had 2 daughters, Diane and Sharon. Diane was Walt and Lilly’s first child and their younger daughter, Sharon, was adopted.

Walt Disney died at the age of 65 in 1966. He suffered from excessive smoking which led to lung cancer. After this the Walt Disney Company decided to exclude all cigarette images and smoking itself from the cartoons.

After Disney’s death the Company continues to create new cartoons and movies which have a great success. They are The Little Mermaid (1989), Beauty and the Beast (1991), Aladdin (1992), The Lion King (1994), Finding Nemo (2003), Cars (2006).
