LAKE BAIKAL
Lake Baikal is a unique and mysterious natural phenomenon whose untouched and magnificent beauty impresses all who see it.
How old is the lake? It is believed to go back about 25-30 million years.
The size of Lake Baikal is impressive. Its area is 31,500 square kilometres, its length – 636 kilometres, its depth- 1,637 metres.
The animal and vegetable world of Baikal is also remarkable. The lake abounds in fish and animals typical of seas and oceans. The famous Baikal omul is a real delicacy.
One more remarkable member of Baikal’s animal is the seal, or nerpa. Its silvery fur is both beautiful and long- wearing.

THE ANGARA
The Angara is the only river flowing out of Baikal. The legend of old man Baikal and his willful daughter Angara tells how Baikal threw the Shaman Stone after his daughter as she was running away to her hero Yenisei, but he failed to stop her.
The river is relatively shallow at its source. The water is warmer here than elsewhere . In winter, when Baikal is covered with a thick layer of ice, the river does not freeze at the rapids but is hidden by clouds of steam.
When guts of wind blow away scraps of mist, hundreds of ducks, cormorants, fish and ducks and other birds can be seen feeding on the fish.

Angara Riverhydroelectric
stations cascade
Angara Cascade includes:
Irkutsk, Bratsk, Ust-Ilimsk and Boguchanskaya (from December 1, 2012) on the Angara River
The Cascade of Angara Reservoirs corresponds to the total hydropower capacity of 9002 MW with a total annual power output of about 49 billion kWh. In 2013, Irkutsk, Bratsk, Ust-Ilimsk and Boguchanskaya HPP cumulatively generated 47.4 billion kWh of power (by 2.7 billion kWh more than in 2012).
Bratsk hydroelectric plant (named "50 years of Great October") is the second level of the Angara Riverhydroelectric stations cascade in Irkutsk Oblast. Located near Bratsk. Since its full commissioning in 1967,the station was the world’s single biggest power producer until Canada's Churchill Falls in 1971. Annually the stationproduces 22,6 TWh. Currently, the Bratsk Power Station operates 18 hydro-turbines, each with capacity of 250 MW.

The Siberian Taiga
Siberian forest is the largest in the world. Over half of it has never been logged. It is home to indigenous people who hunt, fish and gather here. It is fully functioning, giant ecosystem. The taiga represents mankind’s last chance on this planet to preserve intact systems in their natural state. This forest is alive. Wolves roam free across its great expanses. Brown bears, elks, wolverines, northern lynxes and reindeer depend on the taiga to meet their daily needs of food, water and shelter. Birds feed on the seeds of larch, spruce and pine or eat berries. Some feed on the dormant insects in winter.
The relationship between the trees of the taiga and the lives of these animals and birds is crucial. Directly, or indirectly, the yield of conifer seeds limits the number of wild animals that can be supported by the taiga.

Our Native Town BRATSK
BRATSK is situated on the banks of Bratsk storage lake. Old Bratsk founded in 1631 is now under water. Bratsk is a town of industrial complexes. It houses the BHEPS (Bratsk Hydro-Electric Power Station) and the Aluminum Plant. BHEPS with the capacity of 45 million hours kilovolt is one of the biggest in Russia. Cheap electricity made it possible to create non-ferrous metallurgy. The Aluminum Plant, the largest in the country, occupies the territory of one thousand and sixty hectares and includes some tens of industrial units. The combination of water, electricity and wood were important for creating Timber Industry Complex.
“I will never forget my days in Bratsk. I’ve seen this wonderful Siberian city in both summer and winter and I think of it as my second home. If you visit Bratsk the one thing you will never forget is its citizens. The people of Bratsk are so wonderful. Their most appealing characteristic is their generosity! …. Bratsk is also very fortunate to be surrounded by so much natural beauty. Beautiful forests and serene lakes seem to abound in this region. Unfortunately, all this natural beauty is somewhat spoiled by pollution from local industry. I hope that the citizens of Bratsk will do what is necessary to protect their environment as they try to protect their economy.” Kevin Fleming, Canada
