A lot of people enjoy spending their time on beaches. They swim, sunbathing, play water games and just relax there. Also they often leave behind them a lot of garbage, which can be blown or washed into the sea. Ships, fishmen, drains and factories can also bring litter into the water.

Marine litter can harm or even kill sea animals. For example, seals, dolphins and sea lions are curious animals, who want to examine this unusual objects. As a result, they get mixed up in the litter and can’t find food and swim away from enemies anymore.

Also, birds, fish and other marine animals can confuse litter for food and eat it. For example, sea turtles often eat plastic bags because they look like jellyfish, which is one of their favorite food. In the total, garbage fills up the turtle’s digestive system and makes it feel full, so turtles stop eating and starves.

100 000 marine mammals and nearly 1 million sea birds die from caught in or eating litter every year!

Also, marine litter can harm people too. Firstly, It can be thrown back to the beaches. Secondly, people can cut themselves on pieces of glass or metal at the bottom. And finally, litter can block boat propellers, which may cause a breakdown of them.

This is The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a huge accumulation of waste, mostly plastic in Pacific Ocean. It contains over 100 millions tons of litter and reaches 1,5 millions square kilometers. This is more than 2 times the area of France. This is a exceptional example of water pollution by people.

Ways of solution of this problem

Governments must set a ban on factories and ships for the release of waste at seas, oceans, lakes, ponds.
Scientists may develop new technologies of production, which let reuse litter more effective or reduce release of waste.
For the individuals:
Don’t leave trash behind of you on beaches: take all of your litter with you and consider taking any other trash you can see around you too
If you live near a beach, you could organize a Beach Clean-up Day.
