The original World Trade Center (WTC) was a large complex of seven buildings in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan in New York City. It opened on April 4, 1973, and was destroyed in 2001 during the September 11 attacks. At the time of their completion, the Twin Towers—the original 1 World Trade Center (the North Tower) at 1,368 feet (417 m); and 2 World Trade Center (the South Tower) at 1,362 feet (415.1 m)—were the tallest buildings in the world.

On September 11, 2001, a series of terrorist attacks took place in New York, killing almost three thousand people. Two Boeing 767 aircraft hijacked by al-Qaeda terrorists (an organization banned in Russia) crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center (WTC) in New York, another Boeing 757 aircraft crashed onto the building of the US Department of Defense in Washington . The fourth Boeing 757 (United Airlines Flight 93) hijacked by terrorists did not reach the target due to the resistance of people on board and crashed in Somerset County, Pennsylvania.

After the massacre of the crew members, the terrorists sent the liners to the points specified by them in advance. At 08:46, a Boeing 767-200 crashed into the north side of the North Tower of the World Trade Center. The blow fell on the 94-98th floors. 16-17 minutes later, another Boeing 767-200 rammed the south side of the south tower of the World Trade Center. Due to severe damage and fires, the buildings collapsed in less than two hours.

The result of the attacks was the death of 2977 people, citizens of 77 countries of the world, and 19 suicide bombers. The four aircraft carried a total of 246 passengers and crew members. None of them survived. The largest number of victims fell on the twin towers of New York: inside the 110-story skyscrapers with a height of 417 and 415 meters there were approximately 17.4 thousand people.
More than 2.6 thousand people died on the spot and died from wounds. Of the employees and visitors of the North Tower, who were above the impact site, no one escaped. There were only 18 such people in the South Tower. During the rescue operation, 441 emergency workers gave their lives. 125 people died in the Pentagon. The youngest victim is two-year-old Christine Lee Hanson, who flew with her family on one of the planes. The oldest of the dead was 82-year-old passenger of the liner Robert Norton.

On September 11, 2011, the National Memorial and Museum was opened on the site of the destroyed Twin Towers in New York.
The memorial is a park of more than 400 white oak trees that stand around two pools with waterfalls. They were located on the site of the former twin towers.
The names of nearly 3,000 dead in the attacks, including the six victims of the 1993 World Trade Center attack, are carved on the bronze parapets that surround the memorial twin pools.
