The artist's favorite time of year was winter. He recalled:«Холодно. Человек меняется. Психологически. Настроение другое — бодрое. С детства очень люблю зиму. В деревне река. Замораживали колесо в реке — получалась карусель. Шубы, валенки, варежки. Потом русская печь — греемся. С пирогами».

In 1997, the painter was awarded the gold medal of the Russian Academy of Arts and the Order of the Badge of Honor. Despite his age, he continued to paint: 17 paintings appeared this year, among them — "Still Life with daisies", "Landscape with a red roof", "Morning" and others. In June 2001, the last exhibition of the artist was held. On August 25 of the same year, Viktor Sorokin died. He was buried in Lipetsk.
